Van joins SoL

We are happy to announce that accomplished advertising and portrait photographer Van Urfalian is joining The School of Light faculty.

Designing and directing brand campaigns for a diverse group of clients, Van has built his career working through advertising agencies while maintaining a hands on approach. Shooting and teaching analog and next-gen digital photography, Van synthesizes an Art Center trained eye for lighting and shot development with emerging technologies to create unique and resonant images.

Instant Magic

The School of Light was chosen by HBO’s Euphoria make up artist Donni Davy to bring an analog edge to the launch of her amazing new make up brand Half Magic. We set up to shoot over 200 participants inside LA's iconic Moonlight Rollerway, in a specially built set to echo the floral dream sequence in Season 2, Episode 4.

Euphoria has become justly famous for its innovative cinematography, particularly using specially produced Kodak film, and we decided to honor this analogue approach by shooting the participants on instant film with a large format 4x5" camera.

Drawing on our deep experience with film, Polaroid and lighting we were able to provide an instant "wow" moment to a large audience of knowledgeable industry leaders, influencers and artists, who all took home a beautiful framed memento of an enchanted evening.

Light Sensitive

A new series of cameraless photographs by Andrew Hall is now showing at Momed in Atwater Village, Los Angeles.

Curated specially for the restaurant’s interior, the six large pieces record the pattern, harmony and complex beauty of interacting liquid chemicals as they are applied to the surface of light sensitive photographic paper

These beautiful Chemigrams are a joy to experience in this environment, and represent the cream of the artist's current work.

On view until January 2022.
